<title>Assessing land surface phenology in Araucaria-Nothofagus forests in Chile with Landsat 8/Sentinel 2 time series</title>

<summary type="text">Assessing land surface phenology in Araucaria-Nothofagus forests in Chile with Landsat 8/Sentinel 2 time series
include red-listed species and have a high cultural importance for the ancestral population and thus require&#13;
continuous monitoring to support conservation. Monitoring of phenology by satellite observations is a key tool to&#13;
quantify the impact of climate variability on terrestrial vegetation. Here we aim to provide a first quantification&#13;
and ecological understanding of the land surface phenology of protected Araucaria-Nothofagus forests in the&#13;
Conguillío National Park in southern Chile. We exploit time series of enhanced vegetation index from Landsat 8&#13;
and Sentinel-2 satellite imagery from 2016 to 2020 to derive start and end-of-season (SOS and EOS) information&#13;
at 10 × 10 m spatial resolution. Results show that, on average, SOS varies between 11th October and 5th&#13;
November (quantiles 25% and 75% of all pixels). SOS occurs later at higher elevation, in sparsely vegetated&#13;
stands, or in stands dominated by Nothofagus antarctica. EOS occurs on average between 24th March and 14th&#13;
April. EOS shows a high variability between neighboring pixels that cannot be easily associated with forest stands&#13;
or topography. Comparisons with regional-aggregated temperature and precipitation time series show that SOS is&#13;
delayed with colder winter and spring temperatures and EOS shows stronger (but contrasting) correlations with&#13;
summer and fall precipitation. By using a machine learning approach, we find that elevation is the main control&#13;
on the spatial-temporal variability of SOS and EOS, followed by aspect, slope and total tree cover. These results&#13;
suggest that meteorological conditions control the inter-annual variability of the phenology of Araucaria-&#13;
Nothofagus forests but the effect is modified by small-scale topography, climate and stand characteristics.

<summary type="text">Quality and sustainability indicators of the prefabricated wood housing industry—a chilean case study
Wood industrialization provides a contribution to timber-based building. The Chilean&#13;
market is based on attributes such as the experience and trust of companies. The sales price, meeting&#13;
deadlines and quality are attributes that have motivated buyers. There are more attributes to assess&#13;
that are important for the client and market country: building materials and safety, sustainability, and&#13;
environmental assessment. Some of these valuations are provided by certifications such as life cycle&#13;
analysis, reduction of energy, water, gas consumption, thermal, acoustic insulation, fire resistance, etc.&#13;
The objective is to propose an evaluation tool using sustainability indicators for prefabricated lumberbased&#13;
buildings, using technical benefits of wood as an option for manufacturing prefabricated&#13;
structures. They constitute references that can be integrated with international construction standards&#13;
and with it, a process of improvement of the current standards for the housing solution and protection&#13;
of the environment. The methodology is based on standards compliance levels, according to current,&#13;
voluntary, or referential regulations, seeking to differentiate the market offer of prefabricated homes&#13;
through quality indicators, benchmarking and sustainability. The results are an evaluation model&#13;
synthesized into three tables according to the category evaluated: materials, products, or structures.&#13;
It concludes that, to meet demand, the market must adapt its offer to new requirements where it does&#13;
matter how the housing is produced, not only in the economic aspect, but also its impact on the social&#13;
aspect and the environment and what it offers in terms of quality of life. The lumber-based building&#13;
sector needs sustainability attributes indicators to potentiate the companies and start a differentiation&#13;
business.

<title>Urban ecosystem services in South America: a systematic review</title>

<summary type="text">Urban ecosystem services in South America: a systematic review
Nature within cities provides benefits for people known as urban ecosystem services. An assessment of urban ecosystem services is growing in South America, a biodiverse and highly urbanized region. To synthesize this growing body of knowledge in South America, we performed a systematic review identifying patterns in the literature and knowledge gaps. Our review shows that Brazil, Chile, and Colombia contribute the greatest number of studies. More than 80% of the studies were published in the last five years, revealing this as an emerging research topic in the region. More than half of the studies had an environmental perspective and focused on services provided by green spaces. Nearly all studies involved regulating services, followed by cultural services. We found clear knowledge gaps, including a paucity of assessments on supporting and provisioning services, as well as the lack of studies in several countries, evaluations concerning land cover other than parks, and large-scale assessments. Comparing ecosystem services in different planning scenarios is urgently needed to make informed decisions, aid nature conservation, and provide ecosystem services for all urban dwellers. This knowledge will contribute to achieving sustainable cities and equitable access to ecosystem services in South America.
